Follow these five steps to collect and return your DNA sample safely. The entire process takes under 10 minutes.
Carefully open your kit and verify that all contents are included.
Choose one of the two collection methods below. Both work equally well for preservation.
Collect 10–15 strands with the follicle (root bulb) attached. The easiest way is to gather strands from your hairbrush or comb. Avoid cut hair — the root must be intact.
Clip nails from at least 5 different fingers. Standard fingernail clippings are ideal. Trim as you normally would — no special preparation required.
Place your collected sample into the collection pouch. Press the seal firmly to close it. Then attach the sample ID sticker from your instructions card to the outside of the pouch.
Place the sealed collection pouch into the prepaid return envelope. Press the adhesive strip firmly to seal the envelope. Make sure the return address is visible on the front.
Drop your sealed envelope at any USPS mailbox or post office location. You can also schedule a free USPS pickup from your home. Tracking is included — we’ll notify you at every step.
