IVG: when a cell becomes an option.
In vitro gametogenesis (IVG) is the effort to turn ordinary somatic cells, such as skin or blood cells, into functional eggs or sperm in the laboratory. The process begins by reprogramming those cells into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), then guiding them through the complex developmental path that normally occurs inside the gonads.
In mice, this has already worked: multiple research groups in Japan and the United States have produced fertile offspring from IVG-derived gametes. Human research is advancing, with several labs and companies now generating early-stage germ cells and, in some cases, immature gametes. Full functional human gametes suitable for reproduction have not yet been achieved.
We simply preserve the cells that future breakthroughs may one day make useful.
A cell is taken
IVG begins with an ordinary living cell, typically a skin or blood cell. Not an embryo, not a clinic procedure, not a partner.
It is reprogrammed
That cell is reprogrammed into an induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC), the Nobel Prize-winning technique from 2012 the entire field is built on.
Options open
What that unlocks over the coming decades is genuinely unknown. Which is precisely the argument for holding a sample rather than not.
